Domain names are an identification system for use by various internet users to indicate their authority and administrative control over a particular name based on the DNS or Domain Name System. Internet host computers use these names to identify themselves more easily and memorable so that they can be linked up to the numerically addressed Internet identifiers on which the World Wide Web works.

Domain names that have made history are those names that are associated with already existing trademarks, logos or names that have been made famous over time. This could be in any field not necessarily limited to the internet. Such domains are included by the companies owning these trademarks or names so that they are easily remembered by internet users and can be used by them to get further information, products or services. Names like Microsoft, Yahoo, Hotmail, Coca Cola, and IBM etc need no introduction and are some of the names that have instant recall among all web users.

This history of the company allows its domain name to be easily identified, and it is also used by a lot of unscrupulous internet users to register domains with slight variations, which would allow it to be identified as a separate entities. Registries do try to place filters that will identify such names before they are registered. Although some instances do slip through and people are able to register names that have a famous history, where they take advantage of the fame of the original trademark and use this for their own benefit.

A number of court cases have been registered all over the world to prevent the misuse of such  names and there has been a trend by courts to recognize the legitimacy of such suits and have order the removal of such pseudo famous domains. There have been instances of people registering famous or historical names before the original trademark owner does so. This has also been frowned upon by the courts and these domain names returned to their original owners.

Famous names have even been sold by the original owners for millions of dollars and nowadays selling of established web sites thathave a lot of visitors have become quite a business. It is customary for people who want to set up a new business to look for such domain names that have a history of attracting a lot of traffic so that they can instantly set up their own business and take advantage of the visitors that are used to that trademark. This has led people setting up domains, attracting visitors by building up traffic and then selling the domains at an auction to the highest bidder.
